About Lowland Leader Training

This nationally recognised walking qualification has been designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions. This two (2) day course takes place in several beautiful UK locations in small, personalised groups.The leadership opportunities for Lowland Leaders are varied and far reaching and the scheme opens up a natural pathway to other awards and qualifications for leading and working with others in the outdoors.
Important!
Completion of the Lowland Leader training course is a prerequisite for the Lowland Leader Assessment. Only on successful completion of the Assessment, will you be qualified to safely lead groups on day walks in the countryside and woodland of the UK and Ireland, in summer conditions.

Who’s it for?

Lowland Leader training is for anyone who wants to confidently and safely lead in low level countryside and woodland. It’s ideal for Duke of Edinburgh leaders and volunteer staff, and opens up a natural pathway for anyone wishing to lead and work with others in the outdoors.

You’ll need to be at least 17 years old and to have recorded a minimum of 10 varied walks in Lowland terrain, or have attended a Mountain Training Hill & Mountain Skills course. If you’re not sure whether your experience is sufficient, get in touch with us and we’d be happy to guide you.

What will I learn?

Our qualified trainers will guide you through everything you need to know to confidently and safely lead in low level countryside and woodland, including:

  • Leader responsibilities
  • Leadership and decision making
  • Planning and weather
  • Hazards and emergency procedures
  • Equipment
  • Walking skills
  • Navigation
  • Teaching and learning skills
  • Access, conservation and the environment

You’ll be part of a small learning group of upto six (6) people, ensuring a personalised, fun and friendly learning experience. Precise meet locations will be sent to you upon booking.

Mountain Training requires all candidates to register for the Award before beginning training: the current registration cost is £65. If you’re not already registered with Mountain Training, then we can guide you through the registration process after you’ve booked.
