About Hill Skills
The Hill Skills course is aimed at the beginner hill walker and ideal for those interested in developing a practical understanding of how to plan walks, become familiar with the use of a map, learn about the equipment required and also gain an understanding of the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies and gain a valuable understanding of the upland environment.
The course uses countryside and moorland areas where skills transfer to UK and Ireland walking locations.
What you’ll learn
- Planning – successfully planning walks in UK or Ireland hills.
- Walking skills – pace, nutrition, movement skills, steep ground considerations.
- Clothing and equipment – proper dress and gear for safety and comfort.
- Weather – how it affects hills and your day.
- Navigation in the hills – compass selection, map use, poor visibility navigation, GPS introduction.
- Environmental knowledge – minimising impact, good practices, relevant organisations.
- Hazards and emergency procedures – responding to hazards and emergency protocols.
