About Hill and Moorland Leader Training
The Hill and Moorland Leader Award enables experienced hill walkers to lead groups on day walks in the hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland in summer conditions.
Who’s it for?
Operating in terrain that is generally more remote than that used by Lowland Leaders and not as steep or rocky as ground covered by Mountain Leaders, Hill and Moorland training is ideal for Duke of Edinburgh leaders, scout leaders and volunteer staff, and opens up a natural pathway for anyone wishing to lead and work with others in the outdoors.
You’ll need to be aged 18 or over and have at least a year’s worth of experience of hill walking.
What will I learn?
Spending 3 days in some of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes, our trainers will guide you through everything you need to know to confidently and safely lead in hill and moorland areas:
- Leader responsibilities
- Leadership and decision-making
- Planning and weather
- Hazards and emergency procedures
- Equipment
- Walking skills
- Navigation
- Teaching and learning skills
- Access, conservation and the environment
You’ll be part of a small learning group of up to six (6) people, ensuring a personalised, fun and friendly learning experience.
